60 Hz refresh? or a limited number of choppy frames per second? Can you clarify? (we have fixes for both!)

Dunno - before it was nice and smooth but now it is jerky and sluggish
Have tried changing the colour quality from 32 to 16 bit but that has had no effect! Current Refresh rate should be 85Hz according to Windows display properties Any ideas |

I think that would mean you have a limited number of choppy frames per second.

Run the Aquarium and press the S key. It should display something similar (if working properly):
1024x768x16 Direct3D HAL 32.92fps and 1024x768x32 RGB Emulation 2.8fps if there is something wrong. The drivers that Microsoft chose for Windows XP are very poor. What 3D card do you have?

Hi oobob,
have you tried different nVidia Detonator drivers? I'm not running XP. But on Windows 98SE I get over 100fps at 1600x1200 with the 21.83 reference drivers. If I install the latest 23.11 reference drivers I get less than 10fps. I think I preferred nVidia's previous method of beta-testing drivers by leaking them to this current system of releasing them as "reference drivers" bugs'n'all! |

OK now this is wierd - its all choppy and jerky - but when I press S to get my FPS it goes nice and smooth and I get about 75 fps @ 1152x864x16
When I press S again to get rid of message it goes choppy again! Currently using 21.83 NVidia drivers |

Well, that's where we're headed. If the problem is as I describe, it's time to get the recommended Windows XP driver from my website:

Why does a Direct2D message has an effect on the Direct3D? Is it a problem with the integrated version of Direct2D&3D in DX6?

Ok, solution is to press Ctrl-S. Then press SPACE bar and then click EXIT.
You should be good to go and never have to do the "Ctrl-S" thing again (pressing SPACE and EXIT saves that setting). This is basically an nVidia card stabilizer that Jim put into the Aquarium. It's documented in the Frequently Asked Questions, number 4.2.
