what software was used to make this screensaver?

I am looking into making a 3D screensaver and I was hoping someone might know what kind of software was used to make this incredible screensaver. Please let me know. I am so inspired to begin working on my own.

DirectX 8 toolkit is available for $20 I think from Microsoft. Jim said something like that. Lightwave is about $1,100 but you could get a student discount.
