i believe i've found the culprit that was blocking MA3 from exiting properly. i think it is the BOINC program. i was finally pushed over the edge to reinstall everything when i found i couldn't launch any games. so when redoing the whole turkey and getting to boinc, i noticed the caution about Protected Execution possibly blocking any app that uses the GPU in the install options (under advanced). yes, i did not read it carefully the first time. so now everything is hunky dory. boinc probably inserted something deep in 7 that even uninstalling boinc does not work.

But wouldn't it have been nice to have the solution in the same thread as the problem...

![]() ![]() But actually, I suspect that uninstalling Boinc and rebooting will fix the problem. ![]() Anyhow - glad you isolated the problem, and it wasn't anything to do with HDMI. Last edited by Dale; 02-09-2010 at 11:32 AM. |

well, the other thread was kinda old; i didn't think anybody was still reading it.
i said in the beginning that i uninstalled it, so i must have rebooted, as well. now my memory is not so clear. i was so focused on fixing the problem. anyway, the important point is: DO NOT enable Protected Execution unless you want problems. i do not see the point to it anyway. boinc runs the same. maybe it's for mission-critical dedicated boxes. |

![]() By enabling the Protected application execution option in the installer, you were installing BOINC as a service. Which (among other things) means that there's potentially a problem with video stuff. So, no protected mode - and not running as a service. For future reference (of new folks reading this thread): Boinc is a complex application for "volunteer and grid computing" - in other words, letting your computer work on some outside project when it isn't doing anything for you. Not surprising that there might be some chance for conflict with a program like MA3 which runs when you aren't doing anything else. A couple of notes from the Boinc FAQ: "...This means that BOINC will make accounts for itself in your Windows and assign itself rights to run BOINC as a service. By enabling the Protected application execution option in the installer, you will be installing BOINC as a service." " Do NOT set it (Protected application execution) in Windows Vista and Windows 7 if you also want to use a GPU for crunching. The GPU will not be detected when BOINC is installed as a service." |

Addendum
If you try to run MA3 AND BOINC is still running, the same lock up issue will come back. Disabling BOINC before runing will prevent problems.
