Exclamation Could not create Direct3dDevice | Geforce 2

Im getting the following error

cannot create direct3ddevice object

3d hardware chipset may not support rendering in this mode
Saw this running today, looked really nice, on a lower spec machine than this

its windows 2000 SP3, 768 meg ram, duron 800 with
a 64meg geforce 2 mx 400

Running latest detonator nvidia drivers, direct x 8.1
and the desktop is running in 16bit colour mod

basically its doing 2fps and runs like an absolute slug, doesnt seem to want to support, although I find this hard to believe as nvidia are the biggest card manufacturer :0

Hopefully im missing something small

Any help would be most appreciated

thanks

Oh I get 150fps in quake2 and over 100 in quake3

Just had a search through other posts

memory and CPU usage are less than 5% there is hardly anything else going on

Its not running and then slowing down, by the looks of things its just using software and not hardware rendering

HELP!

Reinstall your version of Direct X and then reinstall your video card drivers.

And make sure no other application is using the 3D hardware.
