Big Grin No Sound

Hi,

I downloaded the current Aquarium demo to evaluate it, and although the display is breathtakingly realistic, there's no sound. Some time back, I downloaded an earlier version and experienced this very same problem. As I recall, I was told that there were known problems with the compressed sound version on some hardware/software configurations. I was direted to download a file version with uncompressed sound. This resolved the problem. It would appear that this problem still remains. Does anyone know if there is an uncompressed sound version for the Release 1.1 demo available for download, or does anyone have any suggestion to make the sound audible? Thanks in advance.

Windows 98 was installed on your computer with some kind of Custom configuration, leaving out important components including Audio Compression.

Please go to Add/Remove Programs and click the Windows Setup tab at the top.

I believe it is under the Multimedia tab that you can find Audio Compression. Turn it off and back on and then hit OK. It will ask for your Windows 98 CD and promptly install the necessary components.

Please let us know if this helps you or if you have any further problems.

Although I am again using compressed sound in the file, it is uncompressed before playing. So the drivers do not need to know how to deal with compressed sound. They do need to know about DirectSound, though.

Administrator/Feldon23,

Why didn't I think of that. Well ... you da man. I could be that something I installed skrewed up my audio compression configuration, or it could be that I was a victim of file corruption. Either way, I followed you suggestion (for the most part), but didn't need my Win98SE CD since my hard disk still has the CABS folder resident. In "Windows Setup/Multimedia", I clicked (unchecked) "Audio Compression" and clicked the "Apply" button bar. Then, I re-clicked (unchecked) "Audio Compression" and again clicked the "Apply" button bar". Windows installed the audio compressin components from my CABS folder. I rebooted to update the system configuration files and the sound was restored (audibel). I am one happy camper 8^). Thanks a million for your assistance in the resolution of this problem. - Jim McNamara
