Thumbs Up ** Fish Ranking **

Ok, so you've voted on your favorite fish (Well, 83 of you so far) and you want to know the results...

{Info about Weighted Results}
I am not going to post all of the information right now. Why? Because the poll is not "weighted" in any way. I can go and give a dozen fish a score of 10 and my opinion will have more weight than a person who just votes for a couple of fish, or who gives a broad range of scores.

I will post a graph (probably several) and data once I have gotten this all weighted. Basically, each person will have 100 points to contribute to the fish. You'll see. It will be snifty.

So if I do a simple average, as I will reveal below, the results are a bit misleading. One of the charts I hope to post here once I have the scores weighted will be a scatter plot, to show concentrations of votes for each fish. Even if there are a couple of very low or very high votes for a fish moving the average around, I'd like to show where the clusters are for each fish.

Did I mention I never took a Statistics course? I'm definately winging it.

Some of the ideas I have for the scatter plot, showing where the votes were concentrated for each fish (but still showing lows and highs):

Note: These rankings are not accurate for the Clown Trigger. It scored much higher.

Sounds like a lot of work, Morgan! I didn't really mean to put you through all this when I wondered if a "Favorite/Least Favorite" poll was possible.

Embarassed

Ok, are you ready? Deep breath.

I wrote a program to take all the poll results from my website and make a comma-separated text file ready for import. This program takes all the numbers and shuffles them into the right spots, substituting average (5) any unscored fish (0). I took the raw data and fed it into Excel and made up some charts. The pie chart was accurate with the raw figures because it takes each sample (1 person) and converts their scores into percentages. No person can give more or less than 100%. So the pie chart has been accurate since about 11pm. Realize this is my first time really using Excel in this way so I'm learning.

So the pie chart is DONE... {UPDATE: HERE'S THE NEW LABELED PIE CHART}

So now you have your percentages. Now for weighted points.

Here is your ranking of all 22 fish/creatures and points scored (tallied):
<table cellspacing=4 border=1 bordercolor=AAAA00 bgcolor=000055>
<tr><td>Lionfish</td><td>523.0497</td></tr>
<tr><td>Percula Clown</td><td>453.1223</td></tr>
<tr><td>Starfish</td><td>415.1043</td></tr>
<tr><td>Powder Blue Tang</td><td>411.7179</td></tr>
<tr><td>Flame Angel</td><td>411.2689</td></tr>
<tr><td>Copper-banded Butterfly</td><td>405.3746</td></tr>
<tr><td>Wimplefish</td><td>397.0838</td></tr>
<tr><td>Koran Angel</td><td>395.3112</td></tr>
<tr><td>Clown Trigger</td><td>389.7137</td></tr>
<tr><td>Regal Tang</td><td>381.9304</td></tr>
<tr><td>Forceps Butterfly</td><td>379.4316</td></tr>
<tr><td>Yellow Tang</td><td>376.4910</td></tr>
<tr><td>Purple Tang</td><td>368.5496</td></tr>
<tr><td>Regal Angel</td><td>358.7886</td></tr>
<tr><td>French Angel</td><td>351.8587</td></tr>
<tr><td>Threadfin Butterfly</td><td>348.1166</td></tr>
<tr><td>Blue Chromis</td><td>337.9998</td></tr>
<tr><td>Addis Butterfly</td><td>333.2153</td></tr>
<tr><td>Three-stripe Damsel</td><td>332.8771</td></tr>
<tr><td>Royal Gramma</td><td>326.7717</td></tr>
<tr><td>Picasso Trigger</td><td>317.7930</td></tr>
<tr><td>Queen Angel</td><td>315.4302</td></tr></table>

And some graphix--sorted for your viewing pleasure...

and finally, here's ALL the data piled on one graph!

Each color line is a different person.

This is what I was trying to get across in my other post. Every fish got highs and lows and then a cluster in the middle. The scores were all over the map.

I extrapolated this from the above graph in Photoshop.

Wow! That one with all the data piled on one graph and each color line is a different person, looks like a Jackson Pollock!

Morgan, thanks a lot for the graphically presentation of the results. It was a very cool way to show the results.

Keep up all the good work!

Amazing! Both presentation-wise and the actual result of the poll.

(Tiny begins elaborating on how the results differ from his personal opinions and realise that that was the general idea of the poll in the first place and decides not to).

P.S.

Looking forward to the updated results when the forum members in Florida get their results in...

You can do alot with the data once you've got it in. I do wish Excel would let me do a sorted chart without having to sort the data.

By popular demand, I have replaced the pie chart above with a labeled one, and have moved the old pie chart with separate legend here:

Fantastic work here Morgan!

Surprised to see that our friend Blue Chromis dwells on the bottom part of the list. But then again it looks like all fishes at least have one or two devoted fans.

Any chance of a list showing the numbers of high scores for the different fishes?

Maybe it's not interesting or already visible in the charts... but if you have the data and the time over...

Well, I think every fish got at least one vote of 8, 9, or 10.

The problem is, if someone gave half the fish 10s, then their scores were weighted down to about 7.5s (If you look for a periwinkle blue line through the middle, you'll see that someone did this).

If you look at the graph, you'll see that although the highest concentration of high scores is the Lionfish, these people must have also given a lot of other fish high marks because nobody managed a weighted score of 9 or 10 for the Lionfish.

The maroon-colored curve shows someone who gave an even distribution of scores, and so their very high and very low scores for some fish really counted strongly.

So... if we instead had gotten say 100 points to hand out on the fishes, it would have been a bit more precise?

Like 10 on the Lionfish, 9 on the Flame angel and so on, with a total score of 100 for the whole crew to share...

Maybe we could have gotten a more true ranking list, in which we all had more carefully weighed our votes.

Stupid Question

Ok, here it goes.....
I guess it's too late to vote, huh?
Somehow I must have missed the message about voting for your favorite fish. Oh well, you snooze, you lose.

Great work, though, Morgan, on all the charts, graphs, etc..... Looks like you put a lot of energy into it.
Thanks.

Nobody said you can't vote anymore!

Please do!

I will be redoing these charts in a week or two as more results come in.

It is very automated so it will only take 30-45 minutes to punch in the new data.
