Gravel question

I don't see banding or any of the other described video issues, but in all the beta versions I haven't liked the look of the gravel on the bottom of the tank (it's okay against the glass).

I think it just looks wrong, e.g. compared with DA, GA or real gravel. I know it isn't supposed to be identical, but the gravel looks a bit stretched and messy, just not realistic (a bit like in 2.6 when it's been stretched too much on an LCD). Is it just me?

John

Okay, now I've posted those, on my day off and instead of having breakfast, it does make me look a bit like I should find something more exciting to do with my morning, but I still think it's something that could be better, so worth the effort of at least asking...

I have always thought the same about the gravel. Indeed I find the same problem with DA.
GA has the most realistic gravel. With the others I feel we should have a "sharpen button" as in a photo editing program.

Isn't it a little late in the game?

I mentioned this quite some time ago. To be fair it could well have been in DA.

I did mention it on 14th April, and that comment started "As I said before", so I would suggest I'm at least consistent... (That was in a PM about the alpha.)
I only mention as it seems the most obvious thing that could change to give it a quality boost (the other things being bringing stuff to life). All IMHO so please no-one get upset...

The material used in the bottom of marine tanks is usually white, and comes out totally devoid of detail when you try to photograph it in a real tank. What I did was get 5 lbs of it, spread it out on my workbench, set up some flourescent lights, and photograph it from an angle. It took several weeks to get it to look halfway realistic. There's always room for improvement, but I'd be really interested if anyone has seen a better depiction of saltwater gravel in a program which pans all the way from one side of the screen to the other.
