Thanks Morgan

I wen't into add/remove programs and looked at the uninstall functionality provided by Creative. There are a lot of them, all LiveWare, I presume, other than the "Windows Drivers" component. I don't think I use any of them. However, I'll do the devldr rename first to see what happens (what complains).

That seems to have done it!

Renaming devldr32.exe seems to have no effect on the functionality of AIW TV, CD player, Real player, TDS-3 speech synthesis; all the sound-related programs I could think of to test at the moment.

And.... the problem with shutdown after running Aquarium as a screensaver seems to have been solved! Great suggestion.

Morgan: Did you discover this trick yourself, or learned of it at some forum? I would like to find out more about which LiveWare functions use devldr32, preferably without experimenting with all of them.

Re: ** 99L FINAL RELEASE rants, raves, and bug reports here

I love the starfish! I like the fact that it crawls up on the front of the glass. That's what they do. If you've ever been to the Monterey Bay aquarium, you see them like that all the time.

Blue Screen of Doom may be memory issues or bios settings

If you are getting a blue screen of doom when you run the aquarium, chances are you need to

a.) update your bios * see your mainboard vendor *

b.) wrong AGP aperature setting in bios need to be lowered, and/or disable video caching if you know your video card should be capable of high end texture mapping. 4mg video cards just don't cut it.

c.) Get latest greatest drivers for all system resources like audio, video, VIA chipsets, directX, ect. ect.. ect...

d.) Let your operating system handle virtual memory .. unless you know better there can be flakey thing occur if you have manually setup virtual/pagefile settings especially if you are using advanced power management in either Bios and/or control panel power settings.

e.) Try fewer fish.... see what your system can handle in small increments ... try the wireframe mode too... make sure that you are using display rates that are compatible with your video card and your monitor... Perhaps we could see some advanced refresh rate settings in the Aquarium settings in the future ?

f.) Don't give up .......... its worth it .. so very worth it ....... Might just be a really good excuse to upgrade Make it part of health care cost come tax time ) I watch it for peace of mind..... and mega stress releiver... perhaps some more territorial aggression in the tank would open up new doorways for venting aggressions .. My real fish have always entertained me time after time with their this is my side of the tank breeding rituals ... and hey the swarms are a great direction too ... whoa, I'm going overboard . I'll stop..

finally,
Most excellent to hear that SACH made it a winXP staple and that the web site is blazing new frontiers with a much friendlier front-end..... What can you say; whats next ?? I got all sorts of 3d needs; like a terrarium with lizards or even fanasy dragons and such .. u know the list goes on and on ... and on...
Keep up the great work ...

Re: Blue Screen of Doom may be memory issues or bios setting

Blue screens in the Aquarium are primarily the wrong driver or overheating of the card.

Exit on mouse move becomes disabled...

*****************************************

Bug: Exit on mouse move becomes disabled and doesn't re-enable.

Description:

1. Launch Sachs Marine Aquarium in full screen mode with 'Exit on mouse move' enabled.
2. Press the 'F' key to go into windowed mode where 'Exit on mouse move' becomes disabled as it should.
3. Press the 'F' key again to return to screen saver mode.
4. Move the mouse.

RESULTS: The screensaver no longer 'Exits on mouse move'. If you check the settings, the box is unchecked. If the user checks it again and proceeds to go into windowed mode for whatever reason, 'Exit on mouse move' will need to be re-enabled for the screensaver mode every single time.

EXPECTED RESULTS: If the user checks the box to enable 'Exit on mouse move' for screensaver mode, it should stay that way regardless if user goes into windowed mode and back again.

Yes, putting the Aquarium into windowed mode turns off mouse-exit until the next time the program is started.

Backwards starfish crawling on the glass...

I don't know exactly how this happened but during the course of the day here at work, the program has gone full screen and back to windows mode many times. At one point I looked at it and the starfish was on the glass but it was backwards and you could kind of see the stomach in the middle.

PS: anyone know a place where I can upload small graphics (icons for here) that I can link to?

Re: Backwards starfish crawling on the glass...

Holy cow. That's the first report i've ever seen of the Starfish being backwards like that. Obviously, it SHOULD look like this:

Thanks to aljaban for the snapshot.

Please report your system specs, driver version, etc. Also, can you give the date on your version of 99L? There are several silent updates of 99L.

P.S. If you'd like a forum picture, my offer stands to the whole forum that I will host avatar pictures for you--as long as you don't change them monthly!

Re: Backwards starfish crawling on the glass...

Gawd... just got home and printed the cards on my DeskJet and boy do they look poopie. (Now I know it's the graphic and not my printer.)I will try to mock them back to a respectable (non pixilated) version of the original .biz file with photoshop. Not that anyone would care but me... I just hate doing a half-arsed job.

Re: Backwards starfish crawling on the glass...

I finished it but I can't seem to make it small AND print decent. So... I left it large and in charge. If you can get is small and have it print ok... then that's really darn cool.

This fish went:

through the rock:

Sticky Cursor

I've had a look through this topic and don't think this has been mentioned but I may have missed it.

I just installed a GeForce2MX 200 to replace my old rage pro. The aquarium now performs much better than before except that the cursor remains on the screen all the time. It's not a huge problem becuase if I disable exit on mouse move then I can hide it in the corner, but it definately didn't happen with my old card.

System:
PII 400Mhz
Win 98
GeForce2 Mx 200 (det drivers - 12.41)
224Mb Ram

PS. Thanks Morgan, for your input on installing the card. It took me a week but I finally got it working.

Re: Sticky Cursor

Lightfeathers,

The fish do occasionally pass through the coral. I see it most often on the left coral 'tower'. I can't really see a fish passing thru on your 2nd picture but I have seen fish passing thru coral quite a few times so I believe you.

I'm crossing my fingers that Jim will track down some awesome collision detection code and use it in conjunction with his 3D coral background he's working on.

And he IS working on it. There's rumors of clams. And no, they won't be ready for a while so don't ask.

Post Buttons don't work correctly...

*****************************************

Bug: Buttons in Properties/Settings don't work correctly.

Description:

1. Right click on the desktop and select Properties.
2. Click the screensaver tab (make sure Fish is set as the screensaver) and click the Settings button.
3. Click either the Register or About buttons.

RESULTS: The settings window closes.

EXPECTED RESULTS: Registration info and info about this wonderful product should open in their respective windows. (Just like when the screensaver is running.)

I never had much luck opening a "chain" of windows. When the Aquarium is running, my program owns the main window, and the Settings window is a sub-window. Clicking the About button destroys the Settings window, and brings up the About window. The program does not exit because the main Aquarium parent window is still active.

When the Settings window is brought up by itself by right-clicking the icon, it has no parent. So as soon as you click on one of the other buttons and the window (which is the only one in the chain) is destroyed, the operating system exits the program.

In the early days of the Aquarium, I tried many schemes to get around this. Most involved keeping the first window open while I opened another. But all of them led to crashes, lockups, infinite loops and other disastrous consequences, so I gave it up.
