Exclamation RGB emulation

Hi, I installed my serenesceen Aquarium on my new laptop fujitsu
siemens pentium 4 with S3 Graphics prosavagedDDR sunning windows 2000 updated with directx 9 and worked fine for about 4 days.
Now (I lended my laptop to my coworker) it is playing very very slow.
Pressing "S" it says 4.78 fps (1025x768x16) RGB Emulation v 1.1
I think the problem is in RGB emulation. Why is it workin in this
emulation and not in Direct 3D
Colors set to 16 bit.

Many thanks in advance

best Regards,
Francesco

PS Sorry for my bad english

First, please make sure you do not have any background tasks running which tie up your video acceleration. This includes Microsoft NetMeeting, Remote Desktop, etc.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del once and go to "Task Manager" and go to "Processes" and close every task that it will allow you to close. Then try to run the Aquarium. If it now runs smoothly, then one of the programs you closed was preventing the 3D chip from working.

If this still does not work, please visit http://www.fujitsu.com/ and see if there are newer Display Driver Downloads for your laptop.

Could you please give us a model number on your Fujitsu?

Once we have your model number, we could get you the exact driver download link.

If you wish to try to install the "standard" S3 ProSavage drivers. To do this, please visit our Help page (look for ViRGE, S3, ProSavage Drivers at the bottom).

WARNING: If Fujitsu has made any changes in the ProSavage hardware, these drivers will not work! Please consider this step a "last resort".

The drivers that come on a CD are always ancient.

So your co-worker won't tell you what he did?

I would imagine then that it is possibly not a driver issue but some software he has changed.

Here is the driver page for your laptop:

Bring the laptop back to your friend and ask him what he broke?

Ok, She installed photoshop 7 on the laptop.
I tried to uninstall it but with no results.
also reinstalled the last video drivers and tried to create a new user account on the pc (with no software loaded on startup)

In wich situation does it use RGB emulation instead of 3d graphics ?
Is there a way to log the error ?

many thanks

There are several situations which would cause RGB mode to come up. It would be used if the video card is unable or unwilling to give up enough memory for all 3 of the necessary buffers, or contains no Direct3D hardware, or Direct3D fails to initialize for any reason.

Sometimes it's as simple as going to Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot, and making sure that Hardware acceleration is set to Full.

Hey, I solved the problem:
I run DxDiag (DirectX Diagnostic). It gave a worning like" Netmeeting is in use, cannot initializate direct 3D"
Well, my netmeeting was not loaded and no "conf.exe" task running.
I opened conf.exe, and closed it.
Now it works perfectly.

Many thanks for your support

It uses RGB Emulation if:

* The video drivers don't support 3D at the settings the Aquarium is requesting
* It can't switch the video card to 16-bit
* There is an application or background task tying up DirectX
* The video card has insufficient RAM

Photoshop should have 0 effect on the Aquarium.

Ok, since you are willing to take steps to troubleshoot the Aquarium, please hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up the Task Manager.

Go through the list and stop every program it will let you stop except Explorer.

Now try to run the Aquarium. If it works, then one of your running tasks is the problem.

Have you checked your PC for spyware? Perhaps she was reckless surfing the web and accidentially installed some kind of spyware program like Gator or Xupiter. Those programs tie up all kinds of system resources.

I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy. It's a clean, simple program that analyzes your system and gives you a report of all the spyware programs it has found and lets you pick and choose which ones to eradicate.
