** Contest **

No prizes being offered, but we'd like to know what lowest-end systems people are running the Aquarium on.

Pentium 150? Pentium 133? 120?

K6-200?

What about video cards? The intel i840 and Rage Pro seem to be the lowest.

Your replies would be very helpful.

** Contestant One **

Not trying to spoil the idea or anything, but wouldn't it be interesting with a compilation of video card - fps - resolution - (CPU). I feel that it can be a little tough to tell if a card is "weaker" than one already listed. Also, people with low-end card sometimes tend to be less interested in their hardware (Myself running a 8MB Matrox G200 card not being the perfect example ;-) )

Anyway, A list would also serve as a pretty good guideline for those "Does my card perform up to par?"-people.

K6-2 333MHz / Matrox G200 Millennium (8MB) / 1156x864@24 fps

Re: ** Contestant One **

This is for a specific purpose, namely finding out the slowest system that still runs the Aquarium acceptably.

This is in contrast with the hundreds of posts about people's GeForce 2 and 3 "only" getting 200fps (tongue planted firmly in cheek).

Processor Information

Pentium Pro 200, Voodoo 3 3000, 800x600 (16-bit color), DX8a, .99L of Screen Saver, average 38-40fps.

Screen Saver works great, no problems at all.

Pentium Pro 200 Processor

Looks like I may have won this contest!

It must be time to retire my old trusty and loyal computer and turn it into a doorstop

Celeron 366
64 mg RAM
RagePro w/4mg

SS runs 28 fps with all fish on, 36 fps with only 2 fish. Even at these "slow" speeds it looks great to me! Can't wait to see it on my next faster machine!

Re: ** Contest **

My second computer (AMD K6 3D Processor 350MHz) has a 4MB S3 Trio3D card in it. With all fish on, it gets ~15 fps at 640x480 resolution. It runs fine, except that it freezes if you try to put it in wireframe mode, and there’s a spot on the top of the Purple Tang (looks like the skin of other fish).

** Contest WINNER?**

you may need to define running...
one or my machines is a pentium 200MMX 128ram directX 8 ATImach64 RagePROturbo 8M
running version 99l beta 4 fish,no bubbles, @1024x768 i get 16-17 fps
it may sound slow, but the effect is quite good.

(fyi, all fish, bubbles and sound on i get 10-12 fps, this is jerky)

my pIII 750M runs the fish too quick?
but then i've never seen real marine fish.
regards,
GaRy)

Re: re: systems

How about my second work computer.

Pentium MMX 200
S3 ViRGE/DX/GX PCI with 2MB RAM
9.5 FPS at 640x480 (won't go any higher res.)
12 FPS with 3 fish and no bubbles

I also have another system at home with:

AMD K6-266
S3 ViRGE/DX/GX PCI with 4MB RAM
7 FPS at 800x600
Rod.

Re: Systems

I only have ....

AMD K6/II - 350
ATI Rage 128 - 8MB
Windows 98SE with DirectX8

.... but I have 448MB RAM

When I press 'S' I get - (with 7 fish + bubbles) ...

39/43 fps [1024 x 768 x 16] Direct3D HAL v.99L

... and the SS is fantastic! Jim Sachs is a genius.

Keep up the good work.

I would recommend anyone to take advantage of the very
low cost of memory at this time - Fit as much as your
system can use.

(This is my first post EVER - I hope I have done it right.)

Re: Systems

Definately agree with you on the RAM.

My dad paid $107 for 1MB of RAM for a Macintosh Plus in 1987.

Now it's a quarter a meg or so.

Anyone can get 256MB of RAM for ~$50. And considering how much RAM Windows XP and 2000 want, I suggest getting as much as you can.
