Any forum changes will probably be a little while from now. At the end of the month we are looking at changing servers. Morgan and I both consider the "virtual server" to be a failed experiment. We have had to many slow downs and problems behind the scenes lately to continue this way. After the changeover when vB3 gets a version out that looks fairly solid then we will be changing over to that. There isn't any sense making many changes at this point, and then having to redo them later.

That's cool, I just thought I'd mention it, it's just a matter of replacing one .ico IIRC...

vBulletin 3
Once we switch to vB3, we're on vB3. Moving vBulletin from one server to another is a matter of backing up the database to a file and copying the Avatars, Smilies, and Attachments folders. There's no complex installation so-to-speak. My concern about running with vB3 here is that vB3 uses more RAM than vB2 and we're already bumping into the RAM ceiling on here. Hosting I can't reiterate enough that "Virtual Private Servers" are a failed experiment. A regular web hosting account or "virtual hosting" ($9-30/mo) is typically on a computer shared by 50-100 websites. Busy websites can trip over each other or hang the whole machine. A dedicated server ($99-199/mo) is a single PC used for just 1 web host. 60GB hard drive, 512MB RAM, 1GHz CPU. Overkill for our needs. A "virtual private server" is where they take a high-end PC and split it up into partitions and each person has their own dedicated "slice" of the machine with a fixed amount of RAM, hard drive, and bandwidth. Sounds like a great idea, but I guess the cost of overhead is such that a VPS with 1/16th the resources of a dedicated machine costs almost as much as a dedicated host. Now don't get me wrong, the tech support is invaluable, but still, the price is just out-of-control in my opinion. I just don't understand why nobody has found a way to split a dedicated server 4 ways and allow 4 people to use the server for a cost of ~$50-70 a month. Now, I could do what is called reselling. Once we switch to the dedicated host, I could parcel out parts of the server and people could put their own .com name on their part of the server. If I ever set up an independant business, I'd run it as a secondary account on the same server as FeldonCentral. I considered setting up a photography site where people can host their photos, but PBase.com is already established, cheap, and seems to be running a good, stable set of software. Icons The problem with the .ico files is that you can only have 1 per server. So the logo for the entire FeldonCentral site would be a fish (not that that's bad!).

Folks, If everything goes according to plan, you will probably see everything locked down sometime within the next 24 hours while we move. After that, hold on too your horses. Our resources will be heads and tails over what we had, all for the same price. So all this slow foolishness should be a thing of the past soon.

Just a suggestion:
On the members profile page, you have ICQ Number: AOL Instant Messenger Handle: Yahoo Instant Messenger Handle: I think there could also be MSN Messenger Handle: Many people use it.

I'll add those when we move over to vB3. Also "DVD Profiler page" will be a button.

Thanks to Morgan, Tiny Snapshots is up and running again with "Tiny Järvafält" as the latest addition – Go have a look and tell me what you think.
"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another." /Robert Oppenheimer on witnessing the first thermonuclear detonation in history. |

We are now looking at going ahead and changing to vB3. It seems to be decently bug free with the last update. We don't currently have a color style to match the green that we have now, but there is a blue one made so far, and the default style which basically has no style at all, purely functional. There are many more options with vB3 and we can create the styles after we're up and running. So, any opinions?

Go with the blue initially but try to recreate the green one we are using now when you can.
