screen application
New Mac serenescreen subscriber here.
Question-How do I set the serenescreen application to run in the background of the desktop and alsodisplay folders on the desktop? How many fish can run at a time? Are there two applications( desktop and screensaver)? Do they run independently of each other? How can this be accomplished? Thanks. Tim |

There is no supported method of doing this.
How many fish can run at a time?
7. 8 if you have a widescreen display.

Actually, if you try to run the screen saver and aquarium at the same time, you end up with very very sluggish results.

This may sound silly but what is the difference between the aquarium and the screen saver? Do they display the same thing?

It's all one Aquarium. You can run it 3 ways:
Double-click and run it full screen. Press the F key to run it in a window alongside your work/web browsing. Set it as a Screen Saver so the fish will come up after a predetermined time of inactivity.

Marine Aquarium as Desktop
Actually, if you are running OSX 10.2, you can have Marine aquarium as your desktop. Though it will require a fast computer.
With no other program running, I can get close to 30fps, but the more applications running the slower it gets. Its cool. B&W G3 400 Mhz, ATI Radeon 7000, OSX 10.2 Quartz Extreme, 17inch CRT |

There are a few hacks out there
including an AppleScript and a small shareware from Gideon Softworks called xBack that allows screen savers to be used as a desktop. I believe xBack 2 for OS X 10.2 runs $12 or $15.
Try http://www.gideonsoftworks.com/ and look for xBack. |

Jaguar
Instructions:
Open up the Terminal (found in the Utilities folder within your Applications directory) and paste this: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background And you will see fishes on the background of your Mac. I have a dual 500Mhz G4 and I get between 50-70 fps. I do have a Radeon 8500 video board which probably helps. Of course, you need to have OS X.2 (Jaguar). tony |

Then how do you "undo" it?

To 'undo' it, simply close the terminal window. If you don't want to mess with terminal, there are other options now...
I have discovered a couple of shareware utilities that implement this action. One is Visage, a shareware app, and the other is xBack. A few freeware apps exists: Desktop Effects, DeskEffects 1.5.4 , CoolBackground, BackLight 1.5.0 , Background Screen Saver 0.5. tony |
