But actually, I suspect that uninstalling Boinc and rebooting will fix the problem.
Did you actually uninstall Boinc first, and reboot, as a test? Or did you just turn off Boinc (you said you "disabled" some things, but that's not the same as uninstalling).
Anyhow - glad you isolated the problem, and it wasn't anything to do with HDMI.
