I doubt anyone uses Calc Normals and if they do, they'll set it and forget it vs turning it on and off periodically.
I didn't know this was available, but just so you know:
It makes a big difference in my aquarium! No dropping of framefrate but instead you see a much nicer muscle movement where the tailfins are mounted to the fish.
