Yes, it sounds like age and driver problems. There are a couple of things you might try. Switch to a fairly low resolution, like 800x600. Also switch to 16-bit color, if it's currently using 32-bit. Make sure the second line of text in the Statistics on the screen says "HAL (pure HW vp)".
