Jim, I'm guessing you are using the PlaySound() function found in WinMM.dll?

One suggestion I found is to go to your sound card/device (possibly through Volume control panel), go to Advanced, and choose Restore Defaults.

And if you have not already done so, try reinstalling your sound drivers.
