Last year you upgraded to a Diamond Viper 770 (TnT Riva 2)? A year ago that card should have cost about $35.
You should be able to fully install Windows 98 SE from scratch without needing drivers for your sound and video card. It will start with 640x480 16 colors and no sound.
Once you get back up in Windows, go to
https://www.feldoncentral.com/Sachs/help.html and download my recommend Windows 98 TnT Riva 2 video driver. That will take care of the Diamond card (I do not recommend getting a driver from
www.nVidia.com or Diamond's website!).
Then go to
http://www.creative.com/ and download a driver for your Creative SoundBlaster Live (Value?).
You should be good to go.
Now, if you want to play some of the newer games, that TnT RiVa 2 is not going to do what you want. I'm surprised your friend did not just bump you to a GeForce 2 MX 400 for $75 (now available for $45).
