IMHO - that's a much better solution than dropping icons all over the place. I never did much care for programs that leave little icon droppings all over the place without at least asking me first. ;)

Yes, that's much better than dropping it at the desktop

I... normally ignore it.. wanting to run the program... and.. forget about it and only look (and wonder where) if there is a subsequent problem.. Placing it on my desktop is a reminder that there is a new program that bears watching.. then I delete it

ideally id' like the program to ask if i want to see the readme and it should create a start menu item.

Lots of good, varied ideas.

I believe that Prolific needs to decide the following:

1. What are the purposes of the readme.txt file?

[2. Does the current installation (silently hiding the file) accomplish that?]

3. If not, how should it work?

The beta 9M is now in the installer. just downloaded and testing. :) Get it at SereneScreen.

I am confused about the concern on Readme.txt. I just installed the new installer, looked at the Start->Programs->SereneScreen and there is a link to the Readme there. I think that is the normal method for most software out there.

Yes. However, as Jim points out, the majority of people will (incorrectly) believe this is a Screen Saver.

Where would you expect to find the Readme.txt file for "3D Text" or "Beziers"?

Also, if I were looking in Start>Programs for a Screen Saver named "MarineAquarium3", I wouldn't necessarily tumble to the fact that I should look under "SereneScreen".

I'm not necessarily saying that the current approach (don't even mention a readme) is wrong - I'm just pointing out that the method might be improved, if it doesn't meet Prolific's objectives.

A point well made . Although it does say serenescreen on the crystal , this might be too much of a leap for the casual user . But it seems Jim is against his software forcing something on the user , which is fair enough , so I think we are left with Feldons suggestion , with maybe the word recommended tacked on to the end . But what do I know , I always read the readme file to make sure I'm not missing any features in something I have spent my hard earned money on . Instruction manuals , assembly instructions etc .

I'm with you. I always go in search of readme files for new software I install. And yes, I've always loved reading user manuals cover to cover as well. :loco:

Forcing vsync in all programs just for the screensaver is silly, old version had a registry setting you could change, new version does not. A loss in features.

I just purchased the upgrade, by the way. Please support vsync again.

Jim Sachs 03-08-2009 12:00 AM

I don't remember ever putting it in before, but I'll look into the possibility.

Falz 03-08-2009 03:13 AM

It was a registry tweak which was off by default, but you could change the value to 01 and get it back. I can't force vsync on my laptop due to Intel integrated graphics not having the option.

Jim Sachs 03-08-2009 03:55 AM

I looked into it, and the feature will be in the next Beta.

That's great!

Any reason for using the default System font? Looks a wee bit unpolished. I know a lot of multi language stuff tends to use it, perhaps due to the fixed size.

Also, the file is simply named MarineAquarium3.exe now that it's being sold in the online store - is there a way I can know when a new version is released other than the forum?

Wheee!

feldon34 03-08-2009 03:26 PM

The version at SereneScreen.com will always lag behind the one available here on the forum. The one at SereneScreen.com might only be updated once a month, where as there might be a dozen releases from the forum in that same time period.

Your best way to stay up-to-date is to follow this link:

I probably won't be spending any time on fonts in the near future.

rcl66 03-29-2009 07:19 PM

I have Beta Test 9 and it expired - and I can't find a newer one. May be looking in the wrong place but I checked most threads. Nice to have the 3D version - been using this as a screen saver since day1.

Jav400 03-29-2009 08:35 PM

The Beta versions are only that, Beta's set to expire used for testing purposes.

The Installer version at SereneScreen does not expire, however it is a bit further out of date.

rcl66 03-29-2009 09:11 PM

Thanks - didn't realize that 3.0 was released.
