I'm just going to reiterate my suggestion from 20 years ago. Hire a programmer with an ironclad contract verified by a lawyer that says nothing goes forward until you give complete approval that what he or she has produced does exactly what you want. I know how much pain you've experienced from verbal contracts. Written contracts just keep people honest and aren't that expensive to draft.

I'm hoping to break new ground by re-programming the Aquarium in Unity. If others could have done it, there should be some evidence by now. The fish-related objects and programming in the Unity Asset Store are pitiful. My plans are for a fully 3D environment, in which you can walk all the way around the tank (in VR, if you have the goggles). A fully-articulated octopus would be featured, as well as bulletproof collision-avoidance, refracting water in the tank, and sea anemones which can house clownfish.

Sounds impressive.. looking for beta testers yet..:D

Jim Sachs 12-02-2018 01:37 PM

Ha ha -- haven't started yet (still learning Unity).

That sounds SUPERB. May I pre-order the upgrade now? :D

Jim Sachs 12-02-2018 09:48 PM

Nope. While I'm optimistic, there's no guarantee I'll be around to finish it. I'm already older than any male in my family has ever lived to be.

perkiset 12-03-2018 12:55 PM

"Live long and prosper."

I'm sure you'll both. That said, as the CEO of a couple companies, I know how important a succession plan is. I hope you have some thoughts along that line, vFishtanks around the globe would be a wonderful legacy (among your other incredible accomplishments). And thank you for your service, BTW.

Best wishes for a great holiday season man.

Fester1952 12-06-2018 03:32 PM

Weird! There was an update to Mojave to version 10.14.2 and now mine is working again!

Jim Sachs 12-06-2018 11:35 PM

Hmmm...I wonder if they patched OpenGL. Can anyone else confirm?

Jim Sachs 12-06-2018 11:46 PM

Perkiset - Yeah, my successor is my daughter Jill. :)

She's newly-graduated from AFI as a film director (which is what I still want to do when I grow up). Here's a link to a commercial she just finished for TouchNote (I did the music for her): https://www.facebook.com/TouchNote/v...4298323321366/

Confirmed Working!

I saw the previous post and immediately installed the update to 10.14.2 and YES, it now works. Apple must have patched it.

I'm very happy to have my fish back!

Jim Sachs 12-07-2018 10:19 AM

Hooray!

scuba2000 12-08-2018 06:09 PM

It's such a good product, I'm very happy it's working again!

feldon34 12-09-2018 10:50 AM

The black screen on initializing an OpenGL screen saver did seem to be a bug on Apple's part. Glad they fixed it.

neusys 12-10-2018 04:40 AM

@Philosopher! Thank you for this info re Mac update 10.14.2. I got my fish back! Ta daa! I feel whole again.

neusys 12-10-2018 04:42 AM

Problem has been solved

Thanks to 'Philosopher' who mentioned Apple has come out with an update 10.14.2, it has solved the problem and we all now can have our fish!

Fester1952 12-10-2018 11:26 PM

One thing I have found though is it drives up the GPU temperature and the fan runs continuously. This never occurred before when the screensaver kicked in, and I have a high spec machine.

philosopher 12-11-2018 06:22 PM

Thanks where thanks is due

Thanks everyone, but I feel it's only right to send the thank you's to the proper people: I was just following up on Fester1952's report that the aquarium started working again after the update.

Thanks Fester1952!

Marine Aquarium as Executible File

Yes, it works, but only for a short time. After about 15 minutes or so, the program crashes.

This is definitely not a solution.

Sure hope you guys figure out a work around. I miss my fish...

Sam

Jim Sachs 12-13-2018 12:51 AM

Is this happening to the rest of you Mac guys?

Samf99x 12-13-2018 10:51 AM

Mojave - Marine Aquarium

Jim,

It occurred to me that if you contact all your registered users for the Mac version and ask them if they would support paying for a new version, I imagine you'd get thousands of offers.

This should be enough to warrant the reprogramming I imagine.

Just thought I'd put it out there...

I for one would be glad to pay the full amount again.

Sam

Nothing wrong on my setup. A late 2017 MacBook Pro with a secondary acer display hooked up. Not running hot and am now testing and have hit 1 hour and 15 minutes without any problems at all.

Jim Sachs 12-13-2018 09:42 PM

Thanks for the info.

perkiset 12-20-2018 04:07 PM

So happy! 10.14.2 does the trick and we are Serene again over here!

Thanks Jim for staying at it and other users for posting that we're all good again.

@Jim re. GPU overwork: I don't have that experience.

uczmeg 12-21-2018 03:08 AM

Finally upgraded and I was disappointed that it didn't work.

A 2.7GB 'patch' later and all is good!

I even now have fishes when you type your password if the screen is locked with the saver on. Pretty sure that's new?

Samf99x 12-23-2018 04:09 PM

It works...

Since the new Mojave upgrade, it works now.

Samf99x 12-23-2018 05:40 PM

Jim

Yes, 14.2 does work now, but....

There still seems to be a bug because you can't configure any "Screen Saver Options for Marine Aquarium

You might want to look into this.

Sam

tcoble3 12-31-2018 06:31 AM

Mojave issue resolved?

I also encountered the incompatibility issue upon upgrading to Mojave. However today the screen saver appears to be working normally. Perhaps one of the recent system updates somehow resolved the conflict? I'm currently running version 10.14.3 Beta (18D32a).

Whatever the reason, I'm thrilled to be back to enjoying the beautiful fish! Many thanks to whoever is responsible for the fix!!

Ike Nassi 12-31-2018 05:31 PM

New information: Mojave version 10.14.2 is now out, and Marine Aquarium 3 for MacOS X is now running as a screensaver. I don't know what they did, but it's working flawlessly.:)

I'm not seeing this issue.

A quick check suggest, for example, turn the bubbles on and off.

Ike Nassi 01-06-2019 10:59 AM

Marine aquarium as a screen saver is fixed in the latest version of Mojave.

Ike Nassi 01-08-2019 09:26 AM

It works on the latest Mac OS X relelease of Mojave.

Jim Sachs 01-08-2019 11:15 PM

Thanks, Ike -- we got the message :)

Ramp83 01-11-2019 10:28 PM

THANKS!

Just replaced my Late-2012 Mac Mini with a brand new on running Mojave. Did the 10.14.2 Update. Works great!!!

Thanks, guys!!!

tomgwu 01-21-2019 05:43 AM

I'am using Mojave 10.14.2 and this weekend suddenly Marine Aquarium 3 for Mac is working again as screensaver!

Jim Sachs 01-22-2019 12:41 AM

Yes, we made the announcement. 10.14.2 fixes the problem.

raugust 08-03-2019 11:08 PM

Marine Aquarium Mac 3.3 Status?

Now that the Apple update has resolved the problem with with screensaver mode on Mojave, are there plans to fix the transition bug and release a final version 3.3 for mac?

Jim Sachs 08-07-2019 12:33 AM

That would be up to Jim O'Connor, but I'd be surprised if he was willing to put in the time.
