Goldfish vs Freshwater

What is the difference between the Prolific Goldfish Aquarium and the SereneScreen Freshwater Aquarium ?

feldon34 03-31-2003 03:38 PM

One has goldfish.
One has freshwater fish.

If they were all so easy. :)

Tiny Turtle 03-31-2003 03:39 PM

The (Tropical) Freshwater Aquarium will have typical tropical freshwater fish like neon tetras, Angelfish and a whole bunch of other species. The Goldfish Tank will only have different goldfish and no other species.

Will the code base/resources be common in the 2 screen saver?

OR

They are mutually exclusive?

Quick Death 03-31-2003 03:53 PM

will the graphics of the aquarium and fish be created by Jim for the freshwater and goldfish aquarium?

feldon34 03-31-2003 04:20 PM

SereneScreen (Jim Sachs) Freshwater Aquarium
Prolific (!Jim Sachs) Goldfish Aquarium

and other products that are still in development
}

are all running on ONE codebase which we call the "GUD".

Everything is now modular. If a bugfix is created to solve a DirectX or Windows problem, it is trivial to implement that bugfix into every other product.

Gud being Swedish for "God" gives it an interesting twist, no?

I suggested "RUDE" ~ Reichart Unified Development Environment. But he turned that one down. :)

grape_jellyfish 03-31-2003 04:34 PM

Wonder why? :)

Jim Sachs 03-31-2003 06:22 PM

The Freshwater Aquarium is mine - a SereneScreen product. The Goldish Tank is a Prolific product - I have nothing to do with it other than to offer suggestions occasionally.

You know me too well...

I'm starting to think that Reichart is a shape-shifter. :-)

IXNAY 04-01-2003 03:50 PM

And the Goldfishtank will have toys in it, the freshwater one only will feature a treasure chest (on/off-option)

Reichart 04-22-2003 03:06 AM

Goldfish are fresh water, but these are COMPLETELY different products. The Freshwater Aquarium will feature some new stunning tricks by Jim Sachs.

The Goldfish Aquarium (now available from www.LifeGlobe.com) is focused on the lifelike movement of a fish bread into variation by human control for over 1,500 years. These fish are not of nature. They must fight their plumage, and can barely control their buoyancy. It was quite a task to bring them to life on the screen.

Each product will get us deeper and deeper into a subversive environment. Creating new levels of quality, and detail. This is part of the fun of all of this, subtly adding and perfecting a series of quality products. For news on all of our products visit www.Prolific.com

I think this will be the key difference between a nature simulation from anyone else. Until Jim, I just had never seen anything not in a movie or other fixed environment that was realistic in the least.

That is still true, including the goldfish.

The biggest difference will be Jim. And Jim's personal standard for the result.

The goldfish is very very pretty, but nothing about it or it's environment at this point makes me think it looks realistic. This has been true for every single one of the "other" screen savers that get posted so often and now have a separate forum here.

Jim is the basic difference when it comes to very very good simulations and absolutely amazing simulations.

The Japanese specifically asked for a product with this type of goldfish, because they are extremely popular over there. The market demanded, and Prolific responded. I know it's hard for many to believe that they really move like this, but the artist (one of the world's best-known animators) spent a lot of time studying these little fellows. He has a tank at Prolific, and one at home.

In real life, these creatures are just wiggling machines. Any actual swimming motion is purely accidental. In the wild, they would be called "bait", and their life-span would be measured in seconds.

I have been keeping goldfish for years and the long finned varieties move exactly like that. I saw where someone thinks they bump the glass to much. They do that almost as much as they go to the bathroom.:)

The bodies are like the cheaper varieties you buy at the local pet shop. (a little long from head to tail). I realize that is probably the way most people see goldfish but it would be nice to see some with the show quality body type added at a future date.

Reichart 04-22-2003 06:25 PM

Send pointers to pictures, or post images. We want your feedback.

loub516 04-22-2003 07:29 PM

I posted a few pics in the goldfish photos thread. The red & white demekin (telescope eye) has a show quality body. A little deeper from back to stomach, more rounded. The long finned ryukin also has a nice shape, Though a show quality ryukin has more of a humped back. I'll see if I can find any to post in the goldfish pictures section.
