Lets try and get back on track here. This seems to be heading in a direction that we don't need to be going.

feldon34 03-28-2004 01:16 PM

It seems people are stuffing black and white logos into the pre-beta. This is not really the purpose of this thread.

If you've got a full greyscale logo, please post it and I'll turn it into an Advanced logo and post the results.

jscherber 03-29-2004 12:32 AM

Posting Logos

In what format do you want the logos posted in, and how large should they be? I'm dying to see what my company logo would look like. I'm going to hang a gas plasma display in the front office with MAL running.

feldon34 03-29-2004 07:48 AM

You can post any size (at least 256 x 256) black and white or greyscale artwork as a PNG or any other format that doesn't lose quality (no JPEGs). I'll let you know if it needs reworking.

Internally, the Aquarium expects 256 x 256 PNG-24 with transparency.

Thank you!

This is the right size with tranparency, greyscale, rgb. Jez, I really have to get a learn photoshop book.

Thanks James. Here is what your logo as-provided looks like on the crystal:

Here is my reworking of it:

and how that reworking looks on the crystal:

morgan,
the last pix, is the logo is in greyscale how 'bout the result of b&w?

jscherber 03-30-2004 09:18 PM

Very Cool

Very Cool. Looking forward to trying it out!

Hey is it possible for you to email me a copy of your .png file?

Thank you!

patscarr 04-01-2004 01:13 AM

So, when working with a potential logo, is it best to use a large, black and white .bmp or a smaller pic, about the size it would be on the crystal?

Tiny Turtle 04-01-2004 01:57 AM

Um, howdoyamean "working"? You can always scale down a larger image, but working with a small one and scale it up later won't work.

/Tiny Confusion

patscarr 04-01-2004 03:10 AM

I've got a very large b&w image which is very sharp as I worked on it alot. When I put it into the crystal as is, it doesn't look right. It doesn't look clear. When I scale it down in size using PhotoShop or ACDSee, it doesn't look right either. After the scale down, I can zoom in alot and see that the pixels are all screwed up from the scale down.

P.S. When did you get Elmer? He is VERY cute!

Tiny Turtle 04-01-2004 05:45 AM

Elmer is not mine, he's my mom and dad's. He's fourteen or fifteen months old. The photos were taken in March of 2003

Possibly your b/w image has an inappropriate color-depth which might mess it up. I'll have a look at it when your e-mail comes through.

feldon34 04-01-2004 10:55 AM

If you use the built-in method for loading B&W BMPs they are scaled down to 256 x 256 with NO anti-aliasing or smoothing and then placed on the crystal. If you have a nice high-resolution logo, this is not what I recommend.

I have posted the first draft of the Marine Aquarium Time 2 logo creation guide.

feldon34 04-01-2004 03:39 PM

The day I write up a nice detailed guide has turned out to be the day that I am testing a new build of Marine Aquarium Time 2.

With past versions of MAT2, I had been creating logos as Targa files. Targas are big (256kb each) and slow to load (with 20 logos, MAT2 was taking 5-6 seconds to start up). The new build of MAT2 now has full support for the PNG-24 format which resolves both problems!

I tested color, black and white, greyscale, and complex transparency in PNG-24 format and they all work fine. My 21 logos have gone on a diet, from 5.5MB down to 441kb and the startup time is now < 2 seconds.

I'm now re-working the Marine Aquarium Time 2 logo creation guide to cover PNG files.... :)

drfish 04-01-2004 03:43 PM

Nice... I noticed the tga I made of Tux was much larger than the png... Why use tga at all? I'm no gfx professional but I don't see any advantage...

Edit: God, did I just write "gfx" without even thinking about it? Somebody help me, please...

feldon34 04-01-2004 03:49 PM

Well Targa was the only way that worked 100% in the last build of MAT2. Today's build now supports PNG-24. By way of discussions with Prolific, I think we're going to concentrate all our efforts on PNG-24 and ignore Targa support. I'm sorry that they went to the trouble to write a Targa importer tho. :(

feldon34 04-01-2004 05:32 PM

The Guide is now completely UPDATED to show how to create logos in PNG-24 format. It is a LOT EASIER to create logos too. :)

Um, am I the only one who thinks the carved out effect get totally lost when color is introduced like that?

jscherber 04-02-2004 09:44 AM

Color

I agree, just trying different things. My logo doesn't lend itself to being "carved" as it is a sphere.

patscarr 04-02-2004 11:08 AM

Yes, I agree, no color is best.

James 04-02-2004 04:42 PM

well..maybe it's not craved out but it does looks a bit embossed "out" of the crystal, maybe this is a good effect, making logo embossed out rather embossed in. why not adding a option to adjust the emboss depth? as most of the image processing application does has the depth adjustment for emboss filter.

feldon34 04-02-2004 05:09 PM

Emboss depth can be set in Photoshop or PSP.

Yes, like I said, in many PSP can do that, but for those novice people, it' better for them to has this added in MAL, and even make the emboss out of the crystal, anyway, I shuold post my suggest to wishlist or nevermind, just my 2 cents!

feldon34 04-02-2004 05:34 PM

So you are wanting an improvement in the built-in BMP loading feature, I see. I'll mention it to JR if he doesn't read this.

Marine Aquarium Logo is now Marine Aquarium Time 2. This should eliminate confusion and make it clear that it is a complete replacement/upgrade for MAT.

I'm hearing "a few days". Since MAT2 won't have a logo loader, I'll probably create one.

Since people are posting theirs, I guess I will show one of mine. I have been working on a LOTR set. Here is one of them.
