This is Excellent!!! It's wonderful to see the fish swimming across both dual screens!! Thanks Jim!!:TU:

tomek 10-10-2008 03:37 PM

custom resolution?

I would like to run it in a custom resolution so I can see the full width (with letterboxing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letterbox). Is that possible?

jimkraz 10-10-2008 04:01 PM

So far so good, no problems on my rig, works as smooth as a babies bum, love it Jim, will be in the Q when the final comes out, will try it out on my laptop tomorrow. Well done, it can only get better. Jim

Jim Sachs 10-10-2008 04:11 PM

tomek - I haven't put the anamorphic factor back in yet. For now, you'll just have to hit F and stretch the window to any shape you want.

Isabeau 10-10-2008 04:23 PM

Thanks a million

Thanks very much, i'll put it to the test!

I have some comments, but first, I want to just sit back and enjoy it for a while. Sigh..... :)

edit -- Thanks. :)

Officially coming out of the woodwork.

Ex_Brit 10-10-2008 06:20 PM

Amazing achievement.

DaleArden 10-10-2008 06:38 PM

Looks and works just great . Jim , you can pencil ATi Radeon Xpress 200M into your list of graphics that have been tested ( I'm getting an average 63fps full screen , 100+ in a window ) . I will report any and all bugs that I find , but nothing yet . The difference in fish behaviour and relative swimming speed is the first thing I notice , but the new bubble stream is beautiful too . A big :TU: .

My intro - I've never posted b4 but have lurked for a while . Got MA2 as a gift and am now very happy to be in on the beta . My other favourites are Dream Aquarium and Aquazone Open Water Amazon River . Okay , I'm a DA gal , but that's okay right ?

Tons of praise and three feature requests

Holy crap. AWESOME. The video quality was already incredible in version 2.6 but now it is absolutely not to be believed.

That said, a (small!) list of enhancements:

1) The colour of some of the fish seems a bit washed out - in particular, the flame angelfish, one of my favourite reef fish of all time. When watching these things in RL, the colours are so bright they can be literally painful to the eyes. (Especially when noticing the contrast between the very dark blue pattern on the tail, and the deep red-orange around the "outsides" of the body.) I noticed the same in the old version 2.6, but well, I wasn't invited to be part of the beta test in that one. :p

2) I LOVE the great increase to the number of fish you can have at a time - now is there any chance that we can get a wider selection? We've got a great number of showpiece fish that would make any home reef owner proud, but it'd be INCREDIBLY awesome if I could drop a small school of blue-green chromis in the background of a reef communit tank too, and maybe some bottom-dwelling blennies and gobies. As well, when you have a reef tank with volitan lion fish (THANK YOU! I love volitans!) it'd be awesome to be able to fit out a full predator tank with perhaps some smaller moray eels (snowflake moray, zebra moray) and the like. I don't know how hard it is to individually define completely seperate behaviour and movement patterns for different fish (i.e. schooling, bottom-swimming, coral-lurking) but if any of this is doable, it'd turn a computer into a viable option to actually having a REAL reef.

That said, along similar lines...

3) The starfish rocks. I love the starfish. More inverts? Please? There's so much to love! Snails, shrimp, crabs... =D

I'd like to re-emphasize that basically all three of these are wet dream wish-list type requests, and that you already had in version 2.6 the best aquarium simulation screensaver I've ever seen... and version 3 blows it away. Truly outstanding work, and I hope you're very proud of yourself. You deserve it. Can't wait until there's a release version up to purchase.

[Edit]
Running a steady 111fps on two monitors, 1280x1024@32bpp each, with six fish and a starfish active.
Video chipset is Radeon x1300 Pro.

[Edit 2]
I should clarify that you do already have a ton of interesting inverts, like the tridacna clams in the middle of the aquarium; I'm just hoping for more stuff which, like the starfish, can move around at least a bit.

F34R 10-10-2008 07:23 PM

Very nice work ! I'm really glad I decided to support 2.6 because it has been my all time fav screen saver, and this makes it all worth the money, and time we waited.

Jim Sachs 10-10-2008 07:24 PM

DaleArden - Welcome to the Forum.

Kizayaen - Just about everything you ask for is planned. The fish are currently using the old models, but after the major bugs are worked out, they will be switched to new-style models and behavior. Mouths and gills will work for all fish (not just the lionfish). Darting, chasing, pecking and schooling behavior is planned. The invertabrates will be available in low-cost "creature packs".

Kizayaen 10-10-2008 07:31 PM

Jim, I think I'm in love.

cpharada 10-10-2008 07:58 PM

The 3.0 works beautifully with minor stuttering flaws on iMac using VMWare virtual setting in Windows Vista.
The playlist file loaded on my desktop when I first opened the screensaver file.

The Canon guitar song is a great touch as well. :)

Jim,
Let me know when a Mac version needs beta testing.
I'd love the opportunity.
Carl

Dale 10-10-2008 08:12 PM

Beautiful. Just started testing, so more later.

[I do miss the capability to put a "logo" somewhere, but what the heck...]

DaleArden 10-10-2008 08:20 PM

Ty Jim for the welcome . Always nice to be appreciated .

ROBinLA 10-10-2008 08:26 PM

Great job Jim. I just sat and stared at the 3d effect of the cave passing left to right and back again and being able to see "inside" as the walls change perspective. Looking forward to the new fish models and behavior. Great work though. You should be proud.

bolkar 10-10-2008 08:37 PM

Suggestions after testing the beta

Amazing job Jim,
I was dazzled with 2.6 when I first saw it, but this one is breath taking.
I am running it on my 30" 2560x1600 screen, with 30 fish at 111fps (I have a Nvidia 8800 Ultra).

Since I have been following the development of version 3 quietly, I am aware of the extensive list of items you would be adding. Therefore; I am basing my comments to this beta version;

- The textures look a bit blurry on my screen. Especially the stretched alpha channels for the background items. I know I am using it at a very high resolution, but with bigger screens are getting more and more common, I think it makes sense to have higher res textures, both for the fish and the background items. After all, I already saw a QuadHD TV on sale this week with a resolution of 3840x2160. I assume with the development cycle of version 3, we would be using this for many many years, if not a decade. So, high res textures makes sense for todays and tomorrows higher res displays.

-The limit for the number of fish (which is 30) could be a bit more flexible. I mean with my resolution and fps, it is clear that the number of fish is not a resource issue.

-I believe it would be great, if there is a way to control the size of the background corals and such (not individually, but all together). I can imagine running version 3 on my 60" TV with corals taking 20% of the screen height at the bottom, instead of taking 60%. That way, I can include more fish (someone said a hundred?). Also related with this item, I think it would be great to be able to select fish size too. I see these 2 options as 2 sliders (just like the buble sound) where you set the overal size. That will give great customization opportunity for the Serene freaks like myself :)

-Also, do you plan on making fish size vary? I mean something like +-10%, it will help when you have more than 1 of the same fish type. Are we going to have baby fish? Will they grow over time? I know I am asking too much. :)

Thanks again for the hard work.

Dale - The crystal (for displaying logos or the clock/calendar) is coming soon.

DaleArden - No problem. Say hi to Flash Gordon for me.

CANDYMAN 10-10-2008 08:58 PM

Wow!

Amazing work man.

I'm running an intel e8400 dual core (3.06 ghz) and a geforce 9600 gt and get a solid 111 fps on two monitors with vista. Seems to run very smooth and problem free.

Great. Glad to hear it. I'm in a position to test MA3 on a wide variety of platforms, so (over the next few days) I'll do that, and try to provide a consolidated report.

iMark 10-10-2008 10:01 PM

Holy Cow..fanfreakingtastic!!

raygan 10-11-2008 01:55 AM

I didn't see if we are allowed to post screencapture....are we allowed?

Jim Sachs 10-11-2008 01:57 AM

If you wish.

raygan 10-11-2008 02:12 AM

this screencap is AN INSULT!
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/9342/ma3bz6.th.jpghttp://img413.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
go check it out...no virus on my free AVG8 scan.

I know at least 3 family members will get this for Christmas...if released.
I know 2 co-workers will get this for Christmas....
I know our department will get ....
k, maybe a little overboard :D

I think you guys outdid yourself...:TU: The corals is simply SPECTACULAR!

On to the negatives
I saw some jerkiness when some fishes collide....the lionfish was jerking when bumping to a coral on the way up...not side to side...something about it when its ascending and bumping into the coral...

I'm using a Saitek Eclipse USB KB, and able to adjust the volumes.

I had all fishes=30 fishes, lionfish (ILOVE) had 3 of them.

The corals...maybe someone can use FRAPS demo to capture it in motion, coz, the screencap is just not doing it justice....I'll past this to other PC forums so you can get more ppl's imput, hopefully help you along the way so we can get a Christmas list.

Awesome job...saving my pennies now :TU:
k sleepy time for me...will invite ppl to house to see this.

skullsplitter 10-11-2008 02:37 AM

WOW! blown away with this one Jim, Thanks for all the work thats been put in to produce it, Think I will be getting myself a 42" flat screen for this one, will the final lose the info in the top left as it can be a little distracting from the gem you have created, Still would love to see a version for my mobile phone Thats if you aint to busy BIG THANKS AND THUMBS UP

clifdene 10-11-2008 03:03 AM

Many thanks. Out of the box it looks good. I have yet to try any of the settings but I am getting 111 FPS and 25% CPU.

AMD Athlon 64, 2200 MHz (11 x 200) 3500+, 2048 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM), Radeon X600, XPHome SP3. DirectX 9.0c

Edit. See post in "Crashes on load".

Jav400 10-11-2008 04:32 AM

skull,

This is a BETA, it will always start with the info showing. You can turn it off by pressing "S". Once it goes into final production it will start without the info showing.

As for the phone, that's someone else's department to port it over, if it happens.

Highlander 10-11-2008 04:32 AM

Hey Jim nice work running fine here on a HD ATI 4850

Having some problems with my laptop card nvidia 7600

thanks

Jav400 10-11-2008 04:37 AM

Check your drivers, and remember that this version takes more horsepower to run than the older version.

If you are having problems with your system running hot, increase the sleep () with the up arrow key and lower the framerate some.

Stew2000 10-11-2008 04:41 AM

This is amazing. all those years of hard work definitely paid off.

Lyndamax 10-11-2008 04:49 AM

Thumbs up from me too Jim. I can't believe how beautiful it is i thought the old one was great but this is something else. I'm in the Q too hope it will be available down under. Thanks for putting so much into it I can't even begin to imagine the time and work you put in. It is a credit to you.
Lynda

Stew2000 10-11-2008 04:58 AM

What does the Sleep function actually do apart from change framerate?
Edit---
Just found this post by Jim ;)

nytiger73 10-11-2008 05:00 AM

Awesome!

I am still picking my jaw up from the floor! This thing looks AMAZING in my 24" widescreen monitor purring along at 112 fps.

I have to tell you Jim, my 5 year old son can sit for hours and watch the tank. When he was a newborn he was mesmerized by 2.6, and he even is to this day. He keeps asking "Nemo"

Keep up the great work, I look forward to see the final product.

Jav400 10-11-2008 05:04 AM

Thats mainly what it is for. Remember that there is allot going on with this version, and there will be much more once we get stability verified and more and more things get added.

Running your video card flat out all the time IS NOT a good idea. The heat it produces isn't good for itself or other components in your system.

If the aquarium is running well, framerates are only good for bragging rights. What you want to do is turn sleep up using the up arrow key and get the aquarium running well with as low a framerate as possible and save wear and tear on your system.

Stew2000 10-11-2008 05:08 AM

I turned it right up and get 34fps. that's more then enough for a screensaver :D

iMark 10-11-2008 06:41 AM

Yay..my beautiful fish have room to explore!!

Seriously, this is stellar Jim...I look forward to watching it expand...as your time permits

Quick question to those who know aquariums...How many fish would a tank like this supprt?...I know it's easy for me to want them all in there, but it does get a bit crowded when I'm that selfish at 30...what's a good number?...

I guess I thought it runs too fast at over 100fps, I turned it down to 34-40 fps and i enjoy it at that speed...

Jav400 10-11-2008 06:45 AM

Jim wants this to be fairly realistic. So this is about the limit.

There will be invertebrates offered at a later date in creature packs for a small fee that will be in there as well.

bugsymcd24 10-11-2008 07:10 AM

Absolutely amazing, runs smooth as silk on my machine, have not noticed any glitches so far... great job Jim!!
