Royal Gramma Fin Bug still in V1.1

Hi, Jim.

The Royal Gramma "fullbright left-fin" bug is still in V1.1. I posted a message about it on the old forum after the last beta was released.

The Royal Gramma's left fin "glows" even when all lights are turned down. Very obvious in wireframe mode as well. Seems as if the brightness of the fin texture is not affected by lighting conditions.

By the way, the Lionfish is fantastic. I think what it mimics so well is the grace in which it moves. Beautiful. :TU:

By the way, are you guys also experiencing this bug?

Socrates 02-24-2002 07:36 PM

The fin is definately brighter on the gramma than anything else with tthe foreground lights all the way down.

Although it's barely even noticable. Add that to the fact that I don't use that fish and don't use auto lights, I gyess it really isn't a problem for me so I never noticed it until you pointed it out.

I didn't notice until I got my GeForce 2 MX 200 working this morning that the side fins on the Regal Tang and a couple other fish slightly slide into the body as they come forward. You don't really notice this at 30fps but at 60fps, it's noticeable to me.

If only we had so few things to complain about in the rest of our lives. :)

Starfire 02-24-2002 09:43 PM

Hmm. Morgan, is it only noticeable in wireframe or in normal mode as well?

Yellow Tang 02-25-2002 03:18 AM

Yes, I've noticed exactly the same. Some days ago I posted this:

Has anyone noticed this:

Put a Royal Gramma in the tank, turn all the lights down, wireframe on. Now look at the Royal Gramma, a fin on the left side is painted white(light-gray), all other wires are dark-gray. Looks a bit funny!

Don't know if this is a bug, because I can't see anything of this in normal mode.

Starfire 02-25-2002 07:37 AM

Yellow Tang, it's not very visible during normal running of the aquarium, unless you have auto-lights on.

I first noticed it back when the Starfish was released when I turned down the lights to try getting it to crawl up on the glass. With the lights all down, the Royal Gramma's fin was sticking out like a sore thumb, as if it was radioactive or something.

Maybe it should be renamed the "Royal Gamma". Hehe. :D

No, I can see this glowing fin only in wireframe mode, so this must be a driver issue.

feldon34 02-25-2002 09:52 AM

Doctor, it hurts when I do this!

Then don't do that!

Wireframe is an unsupported bonus feature and the quality of its operation is not a tech support issue. :)

codgio 02-25-2002 05:19 PM

It's most noticable in wireframe mode, but it's definately visible under normal operation and I've seen it on all the various configurations that I've run the screen saver on.

Of course if it hadn't been pointed out to me I wouldn't have thought about it enough to conclude that the fin wasn't right. I'd just have idly watched it and accepted that it was meant to do that.

Also it was only when studying the "Bright Fin" phenomenon that I noticed the issue Morgan mentioned about the fins moving into the body as they come forward.

It's still only when I make an effort to look closely that I notice either of these. So I make a point of not making a point of looking for them. And like Socrates I never really use the Royal Gramma

pipeta 02-25-2002 05:40 PM

The bright fin is definately noticeable whithout wireframe but I don't think it is a bug worth wating time on.

Starfire 02-25-2002 06:27 PM

Pipeta, that's true. I would say that one would only notice it if auto-lights are on, or if you're weird and turn down the aquarium lights at night to let the fish "sleep". :D

It does, however, spoil the perfection of the screensaver in a way.

Frankly, I don't use the Royal Gramma much, in a way to stop myself from staring at that fin. Once you spot it, you tend to stare at it for some reason. Hehe.

The fix is near the bottom of a VERY long list.

Shinsa 02-26-2002 12:54 AM

Looks like Jim already knows about this one.

So, just for troubleshooting reasons... I see it too. Fore lights down, the fin on the LEFT side is much brighter (wire frame or not)

Starfire 02-26-2002 02:17 AM

Thanks, Jim. :)

Anyone noticed that this little fin made it through version 2.6?
Amazing! ;)
