Public Beta $$

This sounds like a MS trick...... charging to test a beta copy. Will this 14.95 (~20 Canadian) go towards the final version?

While I appreciate that programmers need to be paid Prolific may just be shooting themselves in the foot with this degree of commercialism.

:(

drfish 04-19-2003 08:05 AM

As I recall many of us here bought Jim's as a Beta, that's worked out pretty well...

Was wondering about the same thing. I am pretty sure it would go towards the final version(we would actually be getting a discount for trying the beta becouse i think the final will be more then 15 bucks)..at least that is what i presume happening.

EddieWan 04-19-2003 09:50 AM

As was said above. Lots of us purchased Jim's Aquarium as a beta and that carried over through the 1.1 release. I don't know for sure, but I think the same will be true with the Gold fish, but like I said I don't know that as a fact. Your getting it for cheaper than the final since it is beta and may be buggy so your getting a discount so to speak over the final version which will cost more.

BNuying the beta of the original MA was the best software investment I ever made.

Lot's of the software I buy gets updates to the current version.

I'm on the 3rd version of this thing already (0, 1, 2) and I haven't opened my wallet for 2 years.

PS. If they follow the pattern, you will be able to download it and run it as a demo first too.

ESHIREY 04-19-2003 10:17 AM

Same here . I think the same will happen with the GA as it did with MA . I too have been here since 0 and will be here till I die . As long as they keep coming I'll keep buying .

Where were you when SereneScreen Aquarium was in beta?

You are buying the full version of Goldfish for $14.95!

The Marine Aquarium was $19.95 and considered a beta, so this is actually a better deal!

FlagPride is the same way, by the way. Now is the time to buy. I think it will go up to $20 when they get all the really cool intricate details in there like a rope, reflections on the pole, stitching on the flag, some more backgrounds, etc.

Being one of 'them snotty Mac people', I'm afraid to ask about the mac version...

feldon34 04-20-2003 02:22 PM

The Mac team works very fast.

Are we still sticking with the "simultaneous release"?

JimO'Connor 04-20-2003 07:17 PM

Simultaneous release of GA wasn't ever promised, that I know of. We have simultaneous release of MA2, and near simultaneous release MAT (an important person has been sick, which has kept it from being exactly simultaneous).

GA will be available for Mac in a bit. The code was moving too fast for us to try to track it up until now. However, we should see the source code and be able to start working on it soon. I can't give an estimate since I haven't seen the code. However, as a "snooty Mac person" since 1984 you can be sure that we'll do all we can to make it a bang up product.

Skiadogs 04-20-2003 08:46 PM

Besides- on the 'price' point:
If someone doesn't want to have to pay for the beta-they would have to wait how long ;) for the 'real' copy while we get to enjoy the mostly bug free version!

Where did news of the goldfish beta come from? I have yet to be advised!

Feldon posted last week that a beta could be available today...

but now it reads:

"Goldfish Aquarium will hopefully be available this week!"

look here: https://www.feldoncentral.com/forums/ (on top)

feldon34 04-21-2003 11:33 AM

I love it how things get turned into promises.

We got a private beta Friday night and it was problematic, which led me to believe that Monday was *not* do-able.

The latest beta of GA we ran Sunday afternoon seemed pretty solid so I am hoping it WILL roll out today.

Rick 04-21-2003 04:43 PM

Awaiting anxiously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FrogMastr 04-21-2003 06:54 PM

waiting.....

But i think the globe will worth the wait....

Reichart 04-22-2003 02:51 AM

Why are you here reading this forum, you should be getting your free demo from www.LifeGlobe.com

clifdene 04-22-2003 07:13 AM

Got it, but was it worth the wait?

Russell Mix 04-22-2003 09:36 AM

Thanks to all of you who have downloaded GA beta and given us your feedback. As always, it will be helpful in the finetuning and completing of v1.0.
For those who inquired about beta purchase, your $14.95 will entitle you to all upgrades, to at least v1.0, at no further cost or purchase requirement. We expect to sell GA v1.0 for $19.95 on line. Our policy with MA, Godlfish, Flags and future products is to reward beta purchasers with 1) first use 2) at a discount plus 3) all upgrades to v1.0, at a minimum, free. Many of you know that if you purchased MA beta two years ago, you have received or at least been eligible for upgrades all the way to 2.0.
Thanks again for your input and support.

clifdene 04-22-2003 09:58 AM

Tried to buy it ( My wife likes it) but couldn't have my cards accepted!!!!!!!

aouh81 04-22-2003 11:29 AM

Same here. My credit card was not accepted. Does'nt the system accept UK credit cards?

clifdene 04-22-2003 11:47 AM

It is nice to know I am not alone. Perhaps someone will sort it out.

Marian Nichols 04-22-2003 12:27 PM

I was up at six, downloaded the demo, saw that it work, went back and bought it.

clifdene 04-22-2003 01:17 PM

Yes, but you do not live in the UK

Reichart 04-22-2003 01:33 PM

Welcome to the nightmare that is Bank credit Card Companies.
We are working on the UK problem. We have no idea why, but every time we do a new product, they play “country roulette” and pick one for us not to be allowed to sell to. We yell at them, they say something like “Oh, yeah, we can fix that” and then next week it will be some other thing.

Please accept my apology, but let it be known we are working quickly on it.

clifdene 04-22-2003 02:05 PM

Many thanks

Reichart 04-22-2003 06:28 PM

We think we nailed it. One company uses GB for the UK code, and other OTHER bank uses UK for the UK code.

Please try again, and thank you for your patience.

ESHIREY 04-22-2003 06:55 PM

I guess they don't like discover either . It wouldn't take my card and I even called discover and they said there was no attempt for a perches . And I have a very large credit line free with them . So I guess until they fix that , I can't buy it . :(

Reichart 04-22-2003 07:01 PM

Yup, alsow welcome to the game of Credit Cards. I just found out Discover will not be accepted for another week. Amazing isn't it? Pisses me off too. they make this all so difficult. We go live with another product next week (not a screen saver), and we will go through all of this again. Even though htye KNOW it is COMING.

thank you for your patience.

Payment Options

Have you considered or looked into accepting PayPal as a payment option in addition to credit cards?

Not sure how the surcharge is for the seller, but you get payments quick and no country issues.

Reichart 04-22-2003 09:24 PM

We would rather wait the 5 days or so, instead of being pillaged by PayPal.

BBlock 04-22-2003 09:24 PM

Add American Express to the list as well.
It did like my B of A card though!

clifdene 04-23-2003 02:06 AM

Success at last!!!! Many thanks again. I like it now as well!!!!

Russell,
I all I can say about GA v.09 Beta is it's excellent!! .
I paid my $14.95 ($24.00 AUD) without even downloading the demo first and it was worth it.
I also have MA, MA2 and this is just as brilliant if I may say so (sorry Jim).
If this is only a taste of what the final version is going to be like then we are all in for a real treat.

Keep up the excellent work. :TU:

Regards,

I have a PayPal debit card.

It was free, no credit check, has a Mastercard logo on it.

I've used it at retail stores and ATM's. I assume it would work for on-line purchases.

Jim Sachs 04-27-2003 01:39 PM

PayPal takes a huge cut of the profits. I couldn't afford them when I was selling the Aquarium, and apparently Prolific can't either.

Right, but my point on the credit card is that Prolific wouldn't have to do anything special or pay anything to paypal.

If people want to use PayPal and a vendor isn't using them, then they just need to use their PayPal debit card just like they would use their bank debit card.

The Vendor would pay whatever commission or fee they already pay for using mastercards. Nothing special.

Jim Sachs 04-27-2003 10:46 PM

Things may have changed in the 2 1/2 years since I checked PayPal's requirements, but if the vendor only paid the normal credit card fee, then PayPal wouldn't make anything on the sale, since their underwriting card service would charge them the same amount.
