Jerky movement with Win XP Geforce 4 Ti4200
Hi
I'm running on an Athlon XP2200+, Geforce 4 Ti4200, WinXP, 512mb DDR, Asus A7V333 Via KT333 chipset. 19" monitor set at desktop resolution of 1024x768 32bit 70hz refresh rate. I'm getting jerky movement at this and all other resolutions with V1.1 aquarium. I've tried changing all of the obvious settings with no difference. Has anyone else replicated this with a similar setup ?. Any advice on achieving smooth graphics ? |
That's a top of the line system.
Definitely a driver issue or some background program is stealing CPU cycles. Have you got the latest drivers for that GeForce from http://www.nVidia.com/ ? |
Usually, problems are attributed to drivers. You might check which ones you are using and try several other versions. You might also check and see if you have any background programs running that might be interfering on a regular basis and causing the jerkiness.
|
I have the same chipset with just an athlon 1.2 and GF2MX on XP. It's smooth as butter.
I could not say the same thing for the KT266a board I just dumped though. It jerked all over the place. It was a problem in the design of many KT266 motherboards relating specifically to NVIDIA card. It had to be replaced with a later revision board. Anyway, it would run smooth for a half hour or more, then it would start to skip something awful. I tried EVERYTHING for months. Replacing the motherboard eliminated it instantly. |
Urchin, as of yesterday I'm thinking about buying myself an identical system – save that I'm going for an 2000+ instead of your 2200. Are you satisfied with it (non-aquarium wise)?
My bet is that you're thinking 'bout a new monitor since 1024x768@70Hz really isn't up to par with the rest of that setup... TT |
Hi
Thanks for the advice. I will try some more drivers from the nvida & other driver sites to see if that clears up the problem. I have all background programs shut down via msconfig/startup, but thats not clearing the problem. I also noticed that the S key for fps readout is not doing anything - is this a known issue ? Tiny Turtle - yes, apart from the the serenescreen problem I am very happy with the machine. I had a PIII 500mhz before and the performance increase has been phenomenal. Graphics run very fast with good fps. I run a lot of WWII flight sims which are CPU and graphics hungry and all of these now run very smooth. The Samsung dynaflat 957DF monitor is fine and does what I need it to. I'm not one of those people that have to have their monitor at max resolution on optimal refresh rate all the time - I find the lettering and icons at high res a pain to read. |
Max resolution and optimal refresh rate are two quite different issues. Typically, the higher the resolution – the lower the sweep frequency. I haven't been able to pick out what the maximum sweep frequency is for your monitor at your particular resolution, but since that model can handle 1280x1024@85 Hz, I'd say it can manage 1024x768@~100Hz (check your user manual for exact figures). The higher the frequency, the more stable the image so there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to run it at a lower frequency than it can handle.
On a side note, I can add that I've just ordered the pieces for that system and now I find myself walking back and forth by the door waiting (for a week or two) for it to arrive... As for as the defunct "S" key: That's news to me. – Anybody else hear of it? /Tiny Upgrade (I'm on a PIII-450 now) |
Tiny T - Thanks for the additional info. on res/refresh rates. According to the monitor settings options under advanced settings my max res. is 85hz. There are 100 and 120 mhz options if I clear the check box against revealing unsafe settings for the monitor, but I am wary of using higher settings if it says these are unsafe.
Good luck with the new comp when it arrives, i'm sure you will be pleased with it. |
Sounds wise. I'd stick with 85 Hz – That's significantly more stable than 70 Hz anyways.
/Tiny Frequencies |
Tried the new 30.82 drivers and no change. Went back to the 29.42 drivers as they are widely held to be the most reliable and best performers at the moment. Anybody else got ideas on this jerkiness in the movement ?
|
When you bring up the Task Manager ( ctrl-alt-del ), are there any other processes which are using much CPU time?
Is this computer networked or on-line when the fish are jerky? |
Hi Jim
The answers no to each of those. Antialiasing is also off and its an audigy sound card not the dreaded soundblaster. I'm usually OK at sorting stuff out myself, but this one is really throwing me at the moment. Also tried the new 40.xx beta drivers - no change, but good drivers anyway ! – A tad bit over the top with that post, Urch? /Tiny List |
I have exactly the same problem.
System: AthlonXP 1800+ 512MB DDR ram MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard Asus Geforce4 Ti4400 Win XP Pro I get jerky aquarium at all resolutions; not severe, but noticable. Sometimes, for no apparent reason it's smooth, but not very often and I haven't a clue as to why it becomes smooth. When first switching my computer on it's always jerky, but after using my computer for a while, as I say, it can run smoothly, but not always. It's not like I try to shut programs down in task manager to make it smooth - it just happens. I've tried various detonator drivers - using 30.82 at the moment - but none have solved the problem. Also using Via 4in1 v4.40. Just checked Processes in Task Manager and everything is 00 apart from Sytem Idle Process which is 99. I assume this is right? Also, it doesn't matter if I'm on-line or not, the aquarium is still jerky. Glad to find someone else having this problem (if you know what I mean!) Used to run it on an old Duron system, Windows 98SE with Geforce2 mx and it was as smooth as silk. Feel like it could be a difficult bug to find if there aren't that many people who are getting it... |
You aren't running NetMeeting are you?
|
This might sound like a stupid question but how do I tell?
I'm fairly sure I'm not running it though. |
Another thing I've noticed is if I press the "s" key to get the frame rate info, it flicks between 73 and 78 fps. I'm running 1280x1024@75Hz. I'm fairly sure that when it runs smoothly the fps stays almost constant.
Also, if I limit frame rate to 60 I get fps of between 39 and 41 and it's jerky as hell. Any ideas? |

You need to find out what is running in the background. Of course, you also need to make sure your 4 in 1 drivers are installed and up to date. This may or may not be way off base, but for all the people running fast Athlons on Fast KT266 or KT3 boards, how much power supply do you have? What are the reported CPU and Motherboard temperatures? Do your GF4's have fanes on them or just metal heatsinks? If you upgraded, did you carry over the case and fans? Or even better, if these are new systems, have you verified that they have enough cooling? Many manufacturers "overlook" decent cooling, especially with fast Athlon systems. |
Another thought, anyone running the indexing service?
Or a program that is on the task bar, does not hide, and redraws itself at an interval? |
I have 300w power supply. All other programs that put the CPU and video card under load, including 3DMark and games, run fine.
The CPU temperature rises to around 50C under full load, otherwise it's around 45C. The motherboard is around 36 - 40C The fan for my CPU is rated up to AthlonXP 2100+ and has good heatsink compound on it and the case has an internal fan as well. It should be fine at those temperatures. The Geforce 4 also has a fan on it. I know I don't have the very latest 4 in 1s but I don't really want to update them as I think the later versions are all betas. Everything else on my system seems to work well. |
Try turning off vSync. My GeForce 4 was doing the same thing in the SS only til I turned off vSync.
|
The 4 in 1 drivers currently up for download on the Via website aren't beta.
|
I've downloaded the latest 4 in 1 drivers now. Still the same problem. Got the 40.41 detonators too.
I've tried turning of vsync as well but then everything runs too fast and the bubble column looks weird. Quick question: How come in the advanced display properties (in control panel) there's an option to turn of vsync for OpenGL apps but not an option to turn of vsync for D3D apps? Do you always have to use another program such as Rivatuner to turn it off? |
Quote:
I think if the driver is certified it has to not have that option. I remember this coming up before. |
Cod,
Did you look under the "More Direct3D" button? Vsync option is there in the 30.82 driver. Socrates, In the driver properties it says "Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher". Does that mean my driver is WHQL certified? |

I just went into the detonator control panel and the option to turn off vSync under D3D is there under the more options tab.
|
Hmmm....but not with the 40.41s it seems!
Anyway I still don't think that's the problem that I have - if I turn off vsync, everything seems to run too fast. Can't understand why limiting frame rate to 60 actually makes it run at around 40. Something is amiss. Still looks good - just a bit juddery. I just hate those problems that are there most of the time and then disappear for no apparent reason, only to return once you've switched off and back on again. Computers - don't you just love 'em? |
That is a screenshot of the 40.41's
|
Weird - that's not what I get on my 40.41s
I just get texel alignment and that's it. And I don't get the refresh rate button either. Don't know why? |
Have you applied the coolbit registry tweak? I think that that is what renables the clock freq tab and that option.
|
No, but i have rivatuner - does the same thing. The buble column looks weird when i disable vsync and i get 240ish fps - but it still looks jerky!
I think I'm just going to have to put up with this one. It's a shame cos it does spoil the enjoyment a bit |
jerky movement fixed with new drivers
Nvidia beta drivers. (40.72)
I was having problems with the aquarium ever since I upgraded to a GeForce 4 4400. I also had trouble with Unreal Tournament 2003 demo and full game. Got the new drivers (40.72) posted Oct. 3rd I believe is the date and all is well with UT 2003 and the aquarium is now smooth as silk, even with V-sync on. I have an ASUS P45333 MB. Give it a try, but, YMMV. |
Well I've sorted it - although I don't have a clue how.
I recently got a cable modem and having installed it I noticed that the aquarium is smooth as you like. Which is totally weird if you ask me because it used to be jerky all the time even if I was offline and not using my 56k modem. As far as I can remember I haven't changed any other major settings - still using the 40.71 detonators etc. If anyone has any idea as to why installing a cable modem might affect the running of the aquarium, I'd love to know |
So if the SSA became smoother when you removed the 56k modem and installed the cable modem. Out of those two operations, my money would be on the 56k removal as the probable solution. Then again would you expect it to be logical – it's a computer...
BTW, my very similar setup (Asus A7V333, XP2k+, MSI GF4Ti4200-64MB, 512MB-PC2700) runs it smooth as silk although it raises the temps a bit. /Tiny Logic P.S. Was the modem always on (not online – just not turned off) or perhaps an internal version? |
those internal "Winmodems" can be pretty awful. The <$50 modems have a handful of chips and a telephone plug and offload most of the modem-type work and calculations to the CPU. Some of these cards/drivers are terrible.
|
Yeah it could be that, although it wasn't a winmodem, it was a Diamond Supra 56k, which although not very pricey, is quite a good modem and I think is probably in fairly widespread use.
Also, this setup under Windows 98 (before I moved to cable) caused no problems at all. The modem is still installed in my system too. At least I'm happy everything is working ok now - just nice to know why it wasn't before. |
