1974.12.13 Reims Cathedral
"The cathedral held around 2000 people, but the promoter managed to
squeeze 5000 in. It was a terrible situation. People couldn't move,
they couldn't get out, and because there were no toilets inside,
everybody had to piss up against the walls. You can imagine the mess
by the end of the concert. What's more, we got the blame for it.
Even the Pope stepped in. He banned us from playing every Catholic
church in the world."
Edgar Froese ("Melody Maker" magazine, 8 Oct 1994).
"Tangerine Dream, the German avant-garde band, and Nico, the German
international pop-avant-garde chanteuse, joined for a concert last month in
France
...the real item here is that the concert took place in Reims Cathedral..."

therefore an absolute must for every Tangerine Dream fan.

"I remember reading somewhere that the concert consisted of the 35 minute
piece and a short encore. There's something about the radio broadcast I've
always wondered - just how faithful to the original concert is it? It
obviously wasn't broadcast live, as the announcer gives the date.
No disrespect to the band, but I'd be amazed if this really was completely
improvised on the night. There doesn't seem to be a single bum note or brief
patch of noodling while the band decide where they're going to take the
music next. Could the concert tape have been re-recorded and cleaned up
slightly by the band for radio transmission, ala 'Antarktis'?
Was anyone here at the concert and is there an audience tape?"
-Matt Sawyer

1983.12.10 Warsaw Ice Stadium, Poland
The "Poland" album, released by TD in 1984, was inspired by the fall 1983 concerts in Poland and Germany, but recorded at least partially in the studio. Differences in the first set, the completely revised "Warsaw in the Sun" passage, the new Barbakane intro which replaces Sphinx Lightning as played live, the shortened Rarebird, and the missing "Logos Ending Coda" all point to a studio reworking designed to fit the concert onto four 24 minute album sides with all new material. It is a shame that the brighter 'Warsaw in the Sun' version as played at the Germany and Poland concerts has never been released.
The "Dreaming on Ice Stadium" 2 disc fantape is the best known recording of this show. The other recordings are at the wrong pitch/speed and much lower quality.
The version of Dreaming on Ice Stadium I use has had the tracks completely reshuffled to match the sequence of the Evening Concert, and then the second half of the second disc contains the first 30 minutes of the Afternoon show, including the ONE power failure that occured at about the 10 minute mark into Poland. When power was restored, they resumed into the second, ambient passage of Poland.

1986.06.08 Kiva Convention Center, Albuquerque, NM
The famous Albuquerque, NM concert from which not one moment of the official Livemiles 1987 release is derived!
Regarding Livemiles, the introduction in Spanish beginning "Buenos Noches Amigos..." is, a studio creation. As are tracks 1 and 4, which were never played live. Tracks 2 and 3 of the "Albuquerque" half of Livemiles were performed live, but not until the 1988 tour. It is not unreasonable to hypothesize that this deception was carried out to fulfill a contractual obligation to release a "live" album. Apparently the record execs did not compare fantapes! Widely considered one of the best TD albums, Livemiles is mired by the controversy around the wholly inaccurate labeling. In interviews, Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger have all but confessed that Livemiles (At least the "Albuquerque" part) is a studio creation. This does not take away from the music.
The Albuquerque show was not atypical for 1986 shows, however it has quite a bit more improvisation than I have found on other 86 recordings. Known bootlegs are missing the Pilots of Purple Twilight intro, instead starting at the beginning of Stratosfear.

Tangerine Dream's only 1987 concert was a great one, preserved for all time on the two bootlegs Antarktis and 20th Century Serenades, both recorded from the FM radio broadcast of this concert on October 22nd, 1987. The 2 1/2 intervening months between the concert and the FM broadcast gave TD ample opportunity to remix and reperform parts of the music. Those who have compared the audience recording to the FM broadcast confirm that there are some differences.
