Fox attempts to justify why after 3 years of High-Definition SuperBowls, their presentation will be 'Digital Widescreen', with picture quality vastly inferior to a DVD, let alone HD. [Press Release]

FOX Sports will televise 2002 Super Bowl XXXVI, certain to be the most-watched television program of the year, in a new 16:9 digital format dubbed FOX WIDESCREEN(TM). RCA, a brand of Thomson multimedia, will become the presenting sponsor of FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) from pre-game show to sign-off.

The FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) system enables digital television viewers, for the very first time, to enjoy a true Super Bowl telecast, from pre-game to post-game, in a clarity like never before. The FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) picture is twice as sharp as that generated by most DVDs, and four times clearer than traditional analog television.

"A great deal of thought goes into every camera we use and replay we run," said Hill. "FOX WIDESCREEN(TM), for the first time, will let fans with digital televisions enjoy a game the magnitude of the Super Bowl in digital clarity and from every angle we've got."
